Toronto’s fall doesn’t wait for winter to start ruining boots. Rain-soaked sidewalks, wet leaves, and the first cold snaps all show up weeks before the first snowfall, and by the time road salt arrives, most boots have already spent a month absorbing moisture without much thought going into it. The damage from that stretch is usually what determines whether a pair of leather or suede boots makes it through the whole season looking the way they did in September.
Why fall, not winter, is when the damage actually starts
Salt stains get most of the attention, but they’re rarely the first problem. Leather that’s been repeatedly wet and left to air-dry starts to stiffen and crack well before salt ever touches it, and suede that absorbs rain without protection develops watermarks that darken and set into the nap. By the time winter salt hits a pair of boots that went into the season already dried out, there’s a lot less give left in the material to absorb more abuse.
Leather and suede need different treatment
- Leather boots need conditioning worked back into the material after cleaning, restoring the oils that repeated wet-dry cycles strip out. Skipping this step is how leather starts to crack at the crease points.
- Suede boots can’t be conditioned the same way. Cleaning has to lift dirt and watermarks from the nap without flattening the texture, which is a different process entirely from what leather needs.
- Both benefit from being cleaned before the salt season starts, not after a winter’s worth of white residue has already worked into the material.
Get ahead of it before the salt starts
Cleaning and conditioning boots now, while it’s still fall rain rather than winter salt, gives leather and suede a real chance to make it through the season instead of just surviving it. Our Shoe Cleaning service handles leather, suede, and everyday footwear, starting from $35, with pickup and delivery across Downtown Toronto and Scarborough if you’d rather not make a special trip before the weather turns.
